With two weeks in the books our best bets are 8-1 so far. Get on the gravy train while the sauce is steaming. Here are our best bets for week 3 of the NFL season.
Cincinnati Bengals @ Phildaelphia Eagles (-4.5): A battle between two 0-2 teams. Nobody is surprised to see the Bengals here, despite rookie Joe Burrow playing well (60 for 97, 509 yards 3 TDs and 1 INT). On the other side of the ball Carson Wentz has gotten off to a rough start (50 for 85, 512 yards 2 TDs and 4 INTs). Since being up 17-0 vs the Washington Football Team in week 1, the Eagles have been outscored 64-19 since. Ouch. The Bengals lost by 3 to the Chargers and got a backdoor cover against the Browns last week losing by 5. Noting like needing a slump buster and having the Bungles come to town.
PICK: Eagles -4.5
Houston Texans @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-4): Could the schedule get any tougher for the Houston Texans? Week 1 they got the Chiefs (loss 34-20). Week 2 they got the Ravens (loss 33-16). This week they get the 2-0 Steelers, and that is a huge improvement. The Steelers have looked good, not great, beating the Giants by 10 and the Broncos by 5 scoring 26 points both games. Ben Roethlisberger looks like he hasn’t missed a beat, let alone more than a season (50 for 73, 540 yards, 5 TDs and 1 INT). Deshaun Watson looks like he is missing DeAndre Hopkins out there and who wouldn’t. Houston, we have a problem.
PICK: Steelers -4
Tennessee Titans(-2.5) @ Minnesota Vikings: Another game pitting a 2-0 team versus an 0-2 team. The Titans have won 2 squeakers against the Broncos (16-14) and Jaguars (33-30), but have looked good doing it. Ryan Tannehill (47 for 67, 488 yards, 6 TDs, 0 INTs) and Derrick Henry (56 carries, 200 yards) are going to present a problem for a Vikings defence that is ravaged by injury and have given up 72 points in their two losses to the Packers and Colts. The Vikings will try to establish the run against a tough Titans pass rush, but they just don’t have enough in the passing game to put enough points up, and the defence is just too thin. Hate to say it, Vikings go 0-3. Trevor Lawrence anybody?
PICK: Titans -2.5
New York Jets @ Indianapolis Colts (-11.5): Another 0-2 team, the New York Jets, look to get their first win against a very good Colts team (1-1). This will be a popular suicide pick as the Jets have lost by 10 and 18 their last two. But those games were against good teams in Buffalo and San Francisco. The Colts won by 7 vs the Jags and beat up on a depleted Vikings side by 17. The defence has been good, but the offence…not so much. I look for the Jets to keep this one close and keep the survivor crowd on the edge of their seats. 11.5 is just too much chalk, too early in the season.
PICK: Jets + 11.5
