Royal Ascot – Gold Cup Day

We had a nice day y’day, mainly thanks to Sir Busker who came through to win at 12/1 after drifting up to 16/1 at one point.

Thursday is Gold Cup Day, and this is a day when you should follow Frankie Dettori. He has some good chances including the banker of the day which means that he will have a huge following in multiples. Bookmakers are already scared and is there nothing more pleasing than that. Shrewd as we are we will, of course, rely on scared bookies marking down Frankie and then they will have to go higher on other horses. We know who to back!

In the first which is a handicap over 1m2f everyone is saying that 6 Acquitted is a sure thing. At 9/2 it might be tempting. Ryan Moore is aboard and Hugo Palmer has his stable firing. The step up in trip should be a good thing and the more rain the better for Acquitted. The same can’t be said for rival 5 Tritonic. Oisin Murphy is a real plus and has won with him before. Alan King has saddled a winner here already and 7/1 would be a smashing prize if the rain wasn’t there. Check out conditions! 4 Hypothetical will be very popular with the Gosden/Frankie combo. Unknown surface-wise and the form from his last race is very good coming in fourth behind Pyledriver, Berlin Tango so the form is good. We will stick with Acquitted, but we will also have a saver with 2 Grand Rock at 14/1. Conditions will suit and Cieren Fallon is so talented.

Wolferton Stakes is a Listed race showing the world class of this meeting. Those of you who follow Dubai and the racing at Meydan will surely think highly of 5 Dream Castle and 3 Mountain Hunter. Here they are obscure outsiders readily available at 25/1. Andrew Balding has had his runner in peak form since Britain opened up for racing again. Silvestre de Sousa is good but we must say that 8 Fox Tal is a bad favorite. The fourth in the Champion Stakes is of course the best form on offer, but we have to think that the ground will kill his chances. This will give us the opportunity to bet on 13 Sir Dragonet again. He will like the rain and the distance is probably his best. 3/1 is fair.

Jersey Stakes (Gr.3) is really good this year. Unbeaten 4 King Leonidas will go off favorite for Gosden/Dettori. French raider 2 Celestin will surely have his followers in the international Tote Pool. We love the american angle. 9 Monarch of Egypt by American Pharoah has always been promising for Ballydoyle and Ryan Moore is the best there is. 6/1 ? Thank you!

A Listed for 2-year olds will be a battle between the Boys In Blue and Coolmore. Godolphin has Appelby helping William Buick up on 7 Modern News a winner at Newmarket. Could be the real deal but that could also be said about 1 Battleground one of the most regally bred colts ever being by the super stallion War Front out of a Arc-winning mare. The longer the better at this stage of his career and 11/4 is interesting. Dettori is up on 5 Golden Flame but can’t be recommended at 4/1.

The Gold Cup is a fantastic race and champion stayer 4 Stradivarius is going for a hat-trick in this race. He could do it, but the rain is working against him and he isn’t getting any younger. At 2-1 on he is ridiculously short and we will go elsewhere for value. 4-year olds often do good here and 8 Technician who is a group one winner over 15 furlongs could prove just as good over 20 furlongs. 5/1 is good enough but it could pay to go for 1 Cross Counter who wasn’t beaten far by Stradivarius last year. It looks like it should be impossible to reverse form but at 12/1 we are willing to risk it each way.

Next we have a Heritage Handicap over the straight mile. Being drawn high should be a good thing and Frankie has stall number 18 with 2 Verboten trained by Gosden. 15/2 will be a lot shorter if Frankie has won a race or two before this which is likely. 1 Sun Power should stay the mile and was a very classy 2-year old. Handicapping could be his thing. 33/1 is a healthy price.

Sandringham Stakes is the last one today. We have a clear winner here. 6 Soffika should be unbeatable with Ryan Moore aboard this filly trained by Sir Michael Stoute. All Sir Michael trained horses progress well and she will stay the mile without a doubt. She will come late to the scene so Betfair bettors might find a better price than 7/1 in running. 1 Dubai Love is the old Dettori/bin Suroor/Godolphin combination. He has actually won on heavier ground than this and we suspect that his handler has primed him for this. 8/1 is worth a saver.
